Our takeaways from Ceramitec 2024

Along with the rest of the European ceramics community, Drupps attended Ceramitec in Munich last week, which happened on April 9-12. Here are some of our takeaways.

There was a lot of focus on CO₂ reduction, one of this year's main topics along with digitalization. We listened to talks about replacing fossil fuels with windpower and hydrogen as well as increasing energy efficiency. On the latter though, big bold ideas were apparently missing.

In stark contrast to other continents struggling with water scarcity, we could not spot any significant discussions concerning water efficiency. This was a bit unexpected considering Europe is starting to feel the burn regarding water scarcity, joining other parts of the world that are acutely aware of the challenge ahead.

All the more merry then for Drupps to be the bearer of great news that both water and energy supply issues can be mitigated simultaneously by one single technology.

Recycling of airborne wastewater generated in the clay-to-powder process involving spray dryers is a great way to not only recover water but also the energy that makes the water fly. Recycling airborne wastewater could reduce energy bills, and CO₂ emission, by up to 20%.

Being a heavy industry, we suppose new ideas take time to work their way to the top floors. But things can move fast if management really wants to. Industry leader Grupo Lamosa is proof of that. They are comissioning a new Drupps installation in Peru later this year that is projected to recycle 40% of all airborne wastewater with a possibility to add another 40%, totalling 80%. Change does not need to be painful, quite the opposite.

It would surprise us if water recycling and recovery of its energy is not top of the agenda next Ceramitec. Time will tell.
